Except for overnight when the whole family is sleeping, dogs should not be confined to their crates for more than a few hours at a time. Ten hours while you're away at work is too long!! For longer periods, consider closing off a kitchen or other easily cleaned room with a gate.

Wire crates are good for temporary use because most fold down for storage. They're also good for dog car travel because they don't block the dog's view. However, they are not acceptable for airline travel and they don't provide the den-like feel that a closed crate does. Whichever kind you choose, don't forget a bed to pad the bottom.
