Doggy Bedtime
Beds and Crates

Some people have dogs who actually sleep on their own beds. For cleanliness reasons, it's a good idea. If your dog agrees to a bed of his own, PETsMART has several models to choose from. Another option is a kennel crate.

A crate is indispensable for both cats and dogs. It makes a great bed -- the equivalent of a cot that a baby can't climb out of. For cats and small dogs, it doubles as both a bed and a travel carrier. For dogs, crates help with housetraining.

Used properly, crates make life more comfortable for dogs and their people. Used improperly, they're abusive. Except for overnight when the whole family is sleeping, dogs should not be confined to their crates for more than a few hours at a time. Ten hours while you're away at work is too long!! For longer periods, consider closing off a kitchen or other easily cleaned room with a gate.

Wire crates are good for temporary use because most fold down for storage. They're also good for dog car travel because they don't block the dog's view. However, they are not acceptable for airline travel and they don't provide the den-like feel that a closed crate does. Whichever kind you choose, don't forget a bed to pad the bottom.
