Vivisection is an awful word that
conjures up pictures of animal suffering. The use of animals in medical
research is one of the most difficult issues on which to reach a consensus because we have
all benefited from animal-based research and the arguments from both scientists and
protestors tend to be of the emotional "your child or your dog" type. Easier to
come to terms with are the areas of product testing and pre-university use of laboratory
animals. These books enter into the debate, some trying to take a reasoned approach,
others being unabashedly emotional.
